Technology: it is amazing. The age of technology in which we live has made it possible for VIPKID to exist and to reach so many kids throughout China. And it makes it possible for me to be a VIPKID teacher. I love that. Technology is everywhere; it’s is present in virtually every aspect of our lives and most of us can’t remember how we survived without it. Now let’s think about our VIPKIDs.

Our VIPKIDs have never lived a day of their lives without the presence of advanced technology. In fact, most of them were born AFTER the iPhone. Whoa. I have been an educator for many years. This is the first time, though, that I’ve taught online.
Teaching in any environment can be challenging. But I’m sure other teachers will agree that the virtual classroom has presented us with some new-and-improved challenges. While technology has closed forever innumerable gaps, it seems it has potentially opened another: a gap between what a student experiences in a physical classroom and what they might experience in a virtual classroom. In a physical classroom interaction is native. In the virtual classroom we run the risk of blending in with the technology. A student might see us as another on-screen animated character that happens to be talking about phonics or verbs. VIPKID (company) and VIPKID teachers may be setting a new standard, but some classrooms in the virtual world have the capacity of feeling like a more passive, and less interactive, experience. My personal mission for now: Close the gap even more.
I whole-heartedly believe that the virtual classroom can be an exciting, fun and satisfying experience for kids. We may face obstacles with not being in the same physical space with our student. I’m confident, however, those obstacles are most certainly surmountable. I plan on keeping my toolbox fresh and full of ways to give each student the opportunity to be more involved, feel more rewarded, and have more control over their lives in my classroom. I want to make the lessons come alive in my classroom and create something that will, in a virtual sense, touch all their senses. Bring it on. I’m ready.
